Charlie Update

With the last two days reaching 70 degrees Charlie is really starting to lean! The final three days that have guesses for Charlie’s demise are: April 29, 30 and May 7. Who will be the winner? Stay tuned as it will most likely be this week!

The shore line opened up today. Yesterday there were several people still ice fishing on the lake. John talked with them and they said there was still two feet of ice on the lake. They were fishing on the weed bed between the island and the point. John said he broke through the ice not too far from Charlie.

Let it Melt, Let it Melt, Let it Melt

Yeah! We finally made it to the 50 degree mark on the thermometer. This is the first time since last fall. We broke a record for the latest 50 degree spring temps from the 1930’s! And the date in the 1930’s was early April. It’s a wonderful sound listening to all the melting snow. It will certainly help with spring cleaning which starts on Monday! Hopefully the 60 degree temps this weekend will help melt some of the snowbanks, but I think they are here to stay for a while.

Yipee!

Yipee!

The chipmunks are enjoying the spring weather. Time for me to get the peanuts as this little guy was already begging.

Charlie is getting in the act for spring also....he's beginning to lean!

Snow, Rain, Ice equals Mess

This past week has been a huge mix of rain, snow and ice, and what a mess it makes. John I took a stroll around the property on Monday to make sure no trees went through a roof. As you will see it is going to be awhile before Charlie falls through the ice. We start spring cleaning in a week…..should be interesting. Here’s what we found………

Yes, that is still how high our snowbanks are!

New Nature Trail

John and Chris spent this fall adding to our nature trail. They created a south trail that branches off of the loop that goes past the barn. this adds another 1/4 mile to the hiking trail. It is a more rustic, natural nature trail. There was a women’s retreat here last weekend and we gave the trail a try with our snowshoes. What a beautiful hike it was! Snow has finally come to the Northwoods and it is beautiful! Enjoy the pictures.

The woods are aglow

The fall colors this year were spectacular! The woods were aglow. I drove down Nebish Road and it was like being in a sun tunnel the yellow was so brilliant. All our guest who were here last weekend were treated to beautiful weather, warm temps and gorgeous color. Everyone in the area are saying it was the best colors in many years. Enjoy the photos.

The following photos were taken by Rich from Dubuque, IA

The following pictures were taken by Al and Sandie from Amherst, WI at Fallison Lake

The following pictures were taken by Tom and Merrill from Chicago, IL. The first picture shows Merrill in a comfortable position fishing.

Playful Otters

Three otters were playing in the culvert under County K this morning. They didn’t like that I was trying to get their picture, but I managed to get one before they hid inside the culvert. It was fun listening to them scold me for being there.

Pileated Woodpecker

A young pileated woodpecker was trying to get into the bird feeders by the office. I snuck outside with the camera to take a picture. I didn’t want to frighten it away. I didn’t have to worry as the woodpecker didn’t care that there were three of us standing there watching him. He flew right over our heads telling us to “get out-of-the-way”. 🙂

July 4th week brings storms

The extreme heat made its way to the Northwoods and caused several storms for the 4th of July week. On Monday night, July 2nd, what appears to have been a tornado hit County K at Lost Canoe and White Sand Lake. The road was closed for 1/2 a day on Tuesday as crews cleaned up the trees. Thankfully power was only out for 4 hours during the night because there was more to come. On the 4th of July another system came through. Temperatures dropped 25 degrees in less than 5 minutes, there were funnel clouds seen over White Birch Lake, we lost 14 trees and the power for 26 hours! Many memories. Here are some pictures of County K.

Bear takes a stroll

A young black bear has enjoyed strolling along our hiking trail. My sister was excited to have the photo opportunity. Enjoy!
