Cookies, Cookies and more Cookies

We’d like to share one of our family’s holiday tradition with you. Every year since 1945 our family has gotten together to make Swedish Christmas cookies. This year there were 30 of us making all the cookies. At the end of the day we always have a contest to see who can guess how many were made. Our niece Sierra was the lucky one to count all the cookies this year and Aunt Sandy was the lucky winner….she guessed the exact amount…..2010! Not only was this the first time someone guessed the exact amount, but then the amount was the same as the year! WOW! The lodge large kitchen comes in handy to make all the cookies. With Christmas music playing, kids decorating cookies and learning to roll out Pepparkaker (Swedish Spice Cookies) fun was had by all!

Boulder Junction Christmas Walk

Tonight Boulder Junction had their annual Christmas Walk. All the shops are open with free cider, hot chocolate and cookies. There are sleigh rides, roasting marshmallows, Christmas Karaoke, pictures with Santa after he arrives with Mrs Claus on the fire truck, kids making ornaments and the lighting of the town tree. It was a beautiful night with the snow lightly falling and people walking along the streets. John was in charge of the details for the night and needed carolers to sing during the lighting of the Christmas tree, so he recruited the family to help him out. 16 of us donned elf hats and sang several songs. It was agreat start to the Christmas season.

Happy Thanksgiving

All of us at White Birch Village wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. It looks more like Christmas with the snow that fell overnight. It’s a beautiful day today. As I’m writing this post the 4 family dogs (a great dane, a lab and 2 boxers) are romping in the snow. The kids have alreadty been outside sledding as the adults have been busy preparing all the fixings for the 30 of us who are here. We hope you are able to spend the day with your loved ones.

Our turkey stands guard at the door to welcome all visitors.

Lake Freezes Over

With the cold temperatures that have arrived in the Northwoods the lake has begun to freeze. Hopefully the cold temperatures forecasted this weekend we will get a good hard freeze of the lake before more snow falls.

First snowfall

Yesterday morning we awoke to the first snowfall of the season. It’s hard to tell how much came down as it was melting throughout the day. Even so, it’s so pretty with the first snowfall and everything is white. We have our snowshoes ready and hopefully we’ll blaze in a trail around White Birch Lake to use this winter. Keep your eye posted on the blog as later this week we will have our winter packages listed for January and February.

Beautiful Swans

Sorry it’s been so long since I had a post on the blog. John’s dad died on November 1st and we haven’t been in town much. On our way to Green Bay for the first visitation we saw these swans down the road on Little Star Lake. Had to stop and get a photo.

When we stopped the car they were all looking in our direction, but they didn't like our intrusion and started swimming away.
