Fallison Lake Snowshoeing

John and I went to Fallison Lake nature trail today for snowshoeing. We had heard that it was a very pretty trail and it was. The trail is on County N across the street from Crystal Lake. It’s an interpretive trail so many signposts along the way with information about the area. When you’re up here in the summer it would be a great trail to hike.

The many hills made for a great workout.

One of the interprative signs.

The stand of red pines was very impressive.

Did you know Vilas county had so many lakes?

County K after a new snowfall

Our rustic road, County K,  is beautiful in the summer and the fall but winter after a new snowfall rivals for top billing. With all the snow on the smaller pine trees it is truly a winter wonderland! We had 6 inches of snow last night and it is pretty outside.

This isn't on County K, but on our nature trail snowshoeing today.

Bear Cub Sighting

Coming home from church today we encountered a bear cub on County K right by the White Sand Lake wayside.  We thought our eyes we deceiving us as the cub should have been hibernating at this time of year. The only reason a bear would be out at this time of the year would be because they had not stored up enough fat for the long winter hibernation. We sure hope this little guy is able to find some food and make its way back to the den with momma.

The cub let us watch him for quite a while. Wouldn't let a good look at his face though.

1st Annual Ice Fishing Package Weekend a success

Despite the cold temperatures everyone had fun this weekend with ice fishing. We had 4 people here this weekend; a husband and wife & a father and son. This was everyone’s first time trying ice fishing and were great troopers with the cold weather. John took them out on the ice and drilled holes for them and showed them the “how to’s” of ice fishing. The ice is about 15 inches thick right now. Friday night we had a fish fry with what they had caught (plus some that John had stock piled the week before). No need to wait for an ice fishing package, you’re welcome anytime. The fish are waiting!

Nothing more satisfying than eating fresh fish that you caught.

This is what was left over.

Cleaning the Nature Trail

John and I spent a couple of hours cleaning up downed trees on the nature trail to make it easier to get through on snowshoes.  No more having to try to step over the trees.

Eagle Rivers Ice Castle

Every winter Eagle River builds an ice castle. They cut the blocks from a lake in the area. They posted these pictures on the Vilas County Facebook  page. Thought you might enjoy seeing them.

Winter Wonderland

It was snowing again today. That makes about 12 days out of the last 2 weeks that it has snowed. The snow is beginning to be  replenished after the rain around the new year. It sure does help keep it looking beautiful here when it snows everyday. Here are some pictures from snowshoeing on our nature trail around White Birch Lake.

This is one of my favorite spots along the trail. It has such a cool tunnel feel to it.

Another favorite spot.

Some blue sky trying to peak through

Otter Crossroad. They sure have been busy, I came across at least 10 otter runs.

Ice fishing success

Our son and his friend were up last week ice fishing and had lots of fun with all they caught. We enjoyed the fish fry!

Nice size perch!

The largest perch was around 10 inches.
