Newsletter - March, 1997

Dear Friends,

Beginning in April, 1996 was certainly a mixed bag for the Malmgren's and White Birch Village.  An abundance of snow in the spring resulted in the collapse of roofs on two buildings and a prime factor in some winter kill of fish not only in our three lakes but many of those in the area.  The buildings are now rebuilt and the lake freshly stocked.  The DNR shocked the lake in September and pronounced the fish population in good shape.  We will have a revitalized lake!  June brought us sunshine and good times. The weekly picnics began with many palate tempting dishes to delight us along with good fellowship.  The recipes are being compiled and we hope to have them available for you this summer.

Some of the highlights of the season Include:

  • The eagles on Blueberry Island
  • A shootout at Stillwaters
  • A fishing rod dropped in the lake and "caught" later
  • Raccoon babies under Red Oaks
  • Baby mergansers in a tree by the  parking lot
  • Thousands of suckers in the creek
  • The return of Crystal Jackson and her water colors at the beach
  • Fireworks on the fourth of July
  • Jody's embroidery machine

Work continued at the Aqualand property. The fish hatchery building was completed and will be available for camping out along with a fire pit and picnic grounds. Construction has proceeded on the barn in its conversion to a unique unit complete with a hot tub in the silo. It will be a perfect spot for extended stays.

Research on the renovation of the fish hatchery ponds was completed in September along with tentative approval of the DNR.  We anticipate operation sometime this summer.  We are pleased to introduce Janet and Udell Meyers, who will be function as managers this summer. They have been living in the lodge apartment since September and attending to the winter chores.  They come to us from an eight-year assignment as chaplains for the armed services in England. Udell was trained as wildlife biologist and worked in fish and wild fowl management. He also served as a Marine platoon leader in Vietnam where he was widely decorated.  We feel they will be a tremendous asset for White Birch Village.

The resort is still very inundated with snow, but we are looking forward to warmer weather and the arrival of our many friends.
